Twist Grip Sensor Installation Guide
PreWired Bars • 2014-2022 Touring Models
Plug-and-Play Handlebars
First up, we’re looking at their fully plug-and-play handlebars. These are incredibly simple—factory Harley-Davidson throttle-by-wire sensors are already installed, with everything pre-routed through the bars. You just clip them in, plug them into your bike, and you’re good to go.
Dominator offers this setup for 2014 and 2015 Harley-Davidson touring models, including Street Glide, Road King, and Road Glide. The handlebars also include a shorty push-strip sensor—so all you have to do is slide it in and connect it. That’s it—plug and play.
Pre-Wired Handlebars: A Step-by-Step Guide
Next, we’re moving on to the pre-wired bars, which are slightly more involved. These come with:
- Control extensions
- An optional heated grip lanyard (if you have heated grips)
- A fly-by-wire lanyard
- Throttle controls
We’ll now walk through the process step by step.
Removing the Stock Bars
Before we start, let’s go over the tools you’ll need:
- Small needle-nose pliers
- Wire cutters
- Zip ties
- A stitch tool
- A pick
- Some lubricant (we recommend Cable Life lube, but any spray lube should work)
Step 1: Disconnect the Heated Grips
- First, remove the heated grip connector from the factory harness using the needle-nose pliers.
- Carefully pull the wire out and de-pin the connector—this makes it much easier to install in the pre-wired bars.
- Once removed, set the connector aside.
Step 2: Removing the Stock Throttle Wiring
- Apply a small amount of lubricant inside the throttle housing to make removal easier.
- Push the wire through while gently pulling on the other end. The goal is to push more than you pull.
- Once the throttle wiring is out, set it aside.
Important Note: If you try to run the stock wiring through aftermarket handlebars without modification, the casing will snag on everything. It’s sticky and difficult to work with, so we need to remove it.
Step 3: Replacing the Factory Wiring Casing
- Using a stitch tool, carefully remove the factory casing. Make sure the dull side of the tool is facing down to avoid damaging the wires.
- Once the old casing is removed, replace it with high-quality heat shrink tubing provided by Dominator.
- Apply a bit of lubricant and slide the heat shrink over the exposed wiring.
- Use a heat gun to shrink it down securely. This takes a couple of minutes.
Installing the Fly-By-Wire System
Now, we’re ready for what most people consider the hardest part—running the fly-by-wire system through the pre-wired handlebars.
Step 4: Preparing the Wiring
- The pre-wired bars come with everything zip-tied together. Carefully cut the zip ties without damaging any wires.
- Take the fly-by-wire sensor and attach it to the pull lanyard.
- Use heat shrink tubing to secure the lanyard connection. Apply heat to shrink it in place.
- Let the tubing cool before moving on. If you have compressed air, you can speed up the cooling process.
Step 5: Running the Wiring Through the Handlebars
- Apply a generous amount of lubricant to the wiring.
- Instead of pulling the wiring through, push it while gently guiding it with the lanyard. If you pull too hard, you risk breaking the wires.
- When you reach the bends in the handlebars, spray a bit more lubricant inside and continue using a push-pull motion until the wiring is fully routed.
Final Installation
- Align the throttle sensor’s three notches with the slots inside the handlebar.
- Push it into place carefully.
- Reinstall the necessary clips and secure everything with a stitch tool.
- If you have heated grips, reconnect the wiring and complete the installation.
