Heated Grip Installation Guide (Touring Models)

PreWired Bars • 2014-2021 Touring Models

A lot of riders with heated grips want to keep that functionality, so Dominator has provided a process for installing heated grip extensions directly into the bars. Here's how to install the heated grips step by step.

Step 1: Identifying the Heated Grip Wiring

The handlebars come pre-wired with extensions, and here’s what you’ll see:

  • Red and black wires
  • White and black wires

At first glance, this might seem confusing because the factory Harley-Davidson heated grip harness also has red and black wires, but both of the factory black wires have a white stripe. Fortunately, Dominator has a simple way to differentiate them.

Step 2: Marking the Heated Grip Wires

  1. Pull out the left-side wiring first and leave the right side in place. This is key.
  2. Take a small piece of white heat shrink tubing (included in the kit) and slide it over one of the wires.
  3. Use a heat gun to shrink it down—this marks the wire so you can easily tell them apart.
  4. Repeat the process for the right side.

Now you can clearly distinguish which wire is which.

Step 3: Preparing the Connections

  1. Take the larger heat shrink tubing and slide it over both wires.
  2. Use smaller heat shrink tubing for the individual red and black wires.
  3. Align the red and black wires correctly, ensuring they match with the existing harness.
  4. Shrink the tubing down with the heat gun to secure the connections.

Step 4: Cooling and Securing the Wiring

  1. If you have compressed air, use it to cool the heat-shrunk connections quickly.
  2. If not, allow the tubing to cool naturally before proceeding.

Cooling is important because it ensures the tubing becomes rigid, making installation easier.

Step 5: Running the Wiring Through the Handlebars

  1. Identify the heated grip and its corresponding extension wires.
  2. Feed the wires one at a time—this makes the process much smoother.
  3. Apply lubricant to the wiring to help it slide through the bars.
  4. Push more than you pull to avoid damaging the wiring.

The wires should feed through relatively easily.

Step 6: Installing the Heated Grips

  1. Once the wires are fully routed, slide the heated grip onto the handlebar.
  2. Give it a gentle tap to secure it in place.
  3. Double-check that everything is seated properly.

Just like that, your heated grips are installed and ready to go. The process is super simple once you follow the steps, and now you have fully functional heated grips wired into your Dominator handlebars.
